Practical training in the art of theatre costume

The Northern College of Costume is an independent college based in the beautiful City of York and offers intensive practical training in the art of theatrical costume making. Aimed at graduates (fashion/drama) and people with prior experience, it is the only purely practical theatre costume training course in the country.

Photo of girl in corsetClasses are small and taught by highly experienced professional practitioners who all share the fundamental belief of the passing on of skills. The 14 week costume making course is a project based, apprentice style programme that concentrates on costume making to industry standard.

Now in its 2nd year, the College is building a reputation for producing highly skilled costumiers and all graduates achieved employment success within weeks of graduating.

Theatres in support of the college include The Royal Shakespeare Company, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Manchester Royal Exchange, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Derby Playhouse, Glasgow Citizens, New Victoria Theatre.
