Studying at the Northern College of Costume was a wonderful experience. I was able further my knowledge and skills of sewing techniques learning along the way. The small course intake of three students’ works extremely well as the tutoring becomes one to one. The course worked especially well for me as I am a practical learner, I learn by doing and in essence that is what this course is. It is an entirely practical and hands on learning and not so hung up on theory of practice. However you are encouraged to make notes and create a log of what you have done and learnt but it is up to the individual how this side of the work is kept and organised. It is the sewing samples and finished garments that take main focus on the course. And rightly so as I have been able to use these items at interviews to show the level and standard of sew that I can achieve. Since Leaving The Northern College of Costume and completing my month placement at Theatre Clwyd in North Wales I have gone on to work with Birmingham Opera Company, The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on there productions of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ and ‘As you like it’ working as both a wardrobe assistant and dresser. Samuel West production of ‘As you like’ was also included in the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford-Upon-Avon and I was fortunate enough to be made Wardrobe Mistress for it week transfer to the Swan Theatre at the RSC. My skills and knowledge acquired at the Northern College of Costume have helped me get the jobs I have held since leaving. Competition is tough and the standard is high in the costume world and this course gives you that edge that gets you the job.
